Like an 18th century military unit the ACM is broken up in smaller groups or "mess companies".
A mess company was the group of men you drew rations with and divided up the need camp gear on a
campaaign. Since the ACM is constantly on campaign we've found this set up works best for our
progressive approach to living history and make camp life a lot more interesting. These mess
groups are divided over various geographi regions. Currently the Mess companies of the ACM are "the
Cohees" (Ohio), The Byerly Mess (Pennsylvania), "the Pipe Stem Boys" (virginia) and the Hoosier
mess (Indiana).
In the field we choose NCOs from the different mess companies and keep a rotating command structure.
This helps keep everyone up on drill and shows people just how tough it is to be in charge. The only
permanent rank in the company is that of Captain and this is held grudgingly by our fearless leader
Alan Krause.
